Bali is one of the 13.667 islands in Indonesia, the biggest archipelago in the world. It is located at 8 degrees south of the equator, lies east of Java island separating by a narrow strait of Bali, Lombok is a neighboring island as well take two and half hours by jet powered sea shuttle crossing the Lombok strait. Bali Sea is the border in the north and Indian Ocean in the south. Bali’s total area is 5.632 square kilometer. There are around 14 mountains and 2 volcanoes that stretch from west up to the east of the island with Batukaru Mountain (2240 m) in the west, Batur volcano (1717 m) in the center, and Agung volcano (3142 m) in the east. This mountain link divides the island into two plains, northern and southern one. The northern plain is much narrower than the southern one. In the north Bali, the coast is swampy in the west, alternately sandy and full of pebbles in the center and rocky in the east. North West of Bali is hilly and dry so there is no wet rice culture possible, but this place has Menjangan Island, the best spot to do snorkeling and scuba diving. East of Bali, in the coastal regions is also so dry so that the people have to go for miles for water. The southern tip of the island is also dry as there is no river there because of the limestone peninsula but thousands of teak trees grow there. The center part of the island is the most fertile, as all tropical vegetations including fruits, spices, and rice grow there. The dominant feature of the landscape is terraced rice field, the area is called the rice belt of the island, and almost 80 % of the Balinese live in this part and work as farmers.
